• Vivien Alcock (1924-2003)

• A British author who wrote modern, original fiction for learners of English and also children’s books.

• She was born in Worthing, West Sussex in England, but when she was aged 10, her family moved to Devizes in Wiltshire.

• She studied at the Oxford School of Art but left in 1942 to join the Auxiliary Territorial Service.

• She was married to novelist Leon Garfield whom she met during World War II when she was an ambulance driver.

• She wrote more than 20 books in the next 20 years, through which she became widely admired for her gift for blending fantasy and reality and a particular understanding of the inner feelings of teenagers. 

• She is best known for her brooding mysteries and supernatural stories.
